Message From Fashion Guru / Personality DERRICK SABATER

Between Derrick Sabater and You
Briian Dargon July 26 at 2:32pm
Heard you came to the store, sorry I missed ya man. What did you think?
Derrick Sabater July 26 at 8:29pm Report
I hate i missed you as well, but let me be the one of many who've already told you this, you have a beautiful talent and a wonderful craft.
I loved the pieces, and your partner was so fun....his swagga and line only compliments CHIRP and i can't wait to go H.A.M. when i go back.
I told him i had a meeting in the village and didn't want to be late. i love the unit, the pillows, BOW TIES ESPECIALLY and the t-shirts (especially that gray shirt with the textured feathers and the bird).
I think that is the element that i really love about your work is the texture. in addition to the funkiness and bold colors, i love that the items are not just everyday pieces you see, but something unique and authentic.

May God abundantly bless you Briian. Stay encouraged and know that through the tribulations and challenges, God has the ultimate stay at the end for his children and will bless you beyond anything you can comprehend. keep up the great work!

p.s. i can't wait to go H.A.M in your store? i think i already said that. we must talk about some certain pieces and how i can get them in my wardrode. can you say WINNING!

Eventfully Yours,

Derrick Sabater

Our First Weekend....

Was amazing!!!! I think i had a tear in my eye on Saturday, July 23rd 2011.  At 10:59am, i stuck the key in the door and we officially opened 66 BLAK BIRDS, it was momentous.

I had major anxiety leading up to the opening but the love and support we received over the weekend was more than enough to calm any fears i may have had.

We met people from all over the world. Some of them were residents of Brooklyn and some were visiting and they were all very complimentary regarding the product.

Now the harder work begins.  Sustaining the store, getting the word out, keeping the store stocked with product, etc.  I thought there were going to be parts of this venture that would be easy, there are not but we are determined to find the balance so that you, our new friends, can have a great experience when you come through.

Quote From Rapper Nijay Sincere:

Nijay Sincere i think from here on out the majority of my clothes are gonna b from B66!!!!

EXCERPT FROM MY FORTHCOMING BOOK: BROKE(N) GENIUS

6/12/02

BSIXTEE6 BEGINS
It’s been less than a year since the terrorist attacks on September 11th 2001.  I haven’t shared my memories of that day with anyone probably because I’ve heard so many crazy stories about it that I didn’t want to add another one.
A lot of people who weren’t even in the ground zero area  (that’s what they’re calling it now) wanted to put themselves in it to garner some sort of sympathy I suppose or make an insurance or lawsuit claim, who knows?
I’ve been alternating sleeping on my Cousin Tiara’s floor and couch and I’m still unemployed. I’m grateful to Tiara for letting me stay here because I really had nowhere else to go.
I had been a little depressed about not working and with my living situation when my Cousin, Cordell asked me to go to a party with him.  I initially said “NO!  I had not been in a party mood, I was broke and I didn’t have anything to wear.  He convinced me to go and I thought “Maybe I’ll make a tee shirt and wear it”.
The days, weeks, months prior to that I had not been doing anything but wallowing in my own misery so I don’t know why I thought to make a tee but I did.  I took an old tee and wrote out in bubble letters “I MADE THIS TEE”, I then cut the letters out and sewed them on to another tee shirt.
When we arrived at the party, people kept coming up to me asking me where did I get the tee shirt from.  When I explained to them that I had made it, they asked me if that’s what I did for a living and if so, could I make a tee for them and they would pay me.  Uhhhhhh!!!!! That was a no brainer.
Admittedly, aside from the tee shirt that I made for myself, the others were pretty awful.  I think I was more concerned about making money than I was about the quality of the work and it showed.
My family and friends tried to be supportive in that “Oh My Gawd! This is soooooo great! But with their eyes rolled up towards the sky” kind of way (thank you guys, tee hee) but the more I looked at it, the more I started thinking I needed to make them as if they were for me, as I did with the first one.  I started taking the creation of the tees seriously.
I began to like what I was creating. I sort of jumped right into the fire.  I began calling myself a “Designer” although I had no formal training.  I figured if I didn’t start believing it, then how would I be able to convince others.  Common sense was saying that if you talk a good game, then people would buy into it up to a certain point.  Certainly, there would come a time when you would be required to show and prove.

Dekalb Market: UPDATE 8: TWO MORE DAYS TO GO

As the opening quickly approaches, there is still so much more work to do.  We will definitely open on Saturday but will probably have a few small things left to do.

This morning, after Carlos and I went over the specs, we took the black pipe to have it cut and then we cut the framing for the air conditioner. The intern, Lawrence helped paint the shelves to get them ready to be installed.

I have to go and pick up hangers tomorrow and Carlos and I will install the lighting.  The Beer Garden is almost completed and the other vendors have been getting busy trying to get their stores together.

I think we are all feeling the pressure right now but it's going to be awesome.

Person Of The Day:Promoter Extraordinaire: MILES

I recently met DREAM Creations Founder and Party Promoter MILES in Miami Beach, Florida where he was commandeering several parties throughout the weekend.

MILES, who comes off as the stereotypical strong, silent type is anything but when it comes to his present and future goals.  The man knows what he wants and  how to get it.  He doesn't give shortcuts and doesn't take any either.

What began as an 8th Grader's 3-hour a day, 4 day a week commitment to promoting an upcoming school dance, has turned into a trajectory like career choice.

MILES started building a name for himself on the party circuit when he began DJing in Junior High School.  He eventually graduated to the college circuit and developed one of Memphis' first Spring Break parties.  That party brought in 962 people.  When I asked him how he remembered the exact number, he said "You never forget your lowest or highest numbers".

Here are a few more things MILES had to say:

Q: What were some of the lessons you learned in the early stages of your career?
A: I learned that it's easy to make money when you love what you do.  Find something you're good at and money will come.

Q: Do you have employees?
A: I don't believe in employees, I believe in investors.  Investors will do what they have to do to get a return on their investment.  An employee will do what they're told just to get a check.

Q: What's happening in the near future?
A: We're about to do the "ALL BLACK EVERYTHING" Black Party on October 28th here in Miami and then another huge event in November.

Q: What's the bigger picture for you?
A: Promoting concerts, selling out arenas.

Hi! This Is NBC Calling, Do You Have A Minute?

OMG!!! I received an email from NBC's shopping site "THE FEAST" today.  They are doing a preview gallery of the Dekalb Markets Clothing and Accesories vendors tomorrow and ask me to send them some images.

They also ask me for a quote. I said " I want all of my new "FRIENDS" to feel as though each piece was made especially for them". End quote, tee hee.

SOBE Mens Show/Miami Beach, Florida: This Is What The Models Look Like With Clothes On

A few days before i left to participate in the SOBE Mens Show in Miami, i posted photos of the models that had been casted.

Now if you've ever attended a model casting, you know all too well that there are times when you look at the model who is physically present and then look at their photos and ask yourself "Where is the person in the photo?"

This was the exception. For the most part, they all looked like their photos but there are always challenges designing for or styling models sight unseen.

Dekalb Market: UPDATE 8

Well four more days until we officially open the doors for business and i'm a wreck.  We received the keys two days ago and we've made considerable progress.

This morning, Carlos and I cut the wood for the storage base and my shelving.  I primed the shelf and will sand, prime again and then paint it later.

Right now, Carlos is installing the molding and we'll break for lunch.  I think we'll be ready on opening day, well actually, i'm pretty sure we'll be.

I'm going to sign off now, i'm multi-tasking and have to go sew some product.  See ya lata!!!

Signing With A Modeling Agency

Aspiring models ask me all the time to refer them to agencies or other photographers as well as "How do i start my portfolio"? How do i and what is a comp card? etc.

There is no one answer or necessarily a right or wrong  way.

Along with my own experience, i will pass on information from more informative sources to help steer you in the right direction.

This is an excerpt from a book by Aaron Marcus:

Some commercial modeling agencies ask models to sign exclusive contracts. If you sign an exclusive contract, you may only accept bookings from that modeling agency. You may, however, be able to accept a booking with another modeling agency if you obtain permission from your modeling agency.

If you are not signed with a modeling agency, you can freelance and accept bookings from any modeling agency.

There are pros and cons to signing with a modeling agency.

On the positive side, you will have one person working very hard on your behalf. You will only need to supply one modeling agency with composite sheets, mini books, and head shots. Life is simpler. When you are not available to work on certain days, you only need to notify one modeling agency.

On the negative side, some models sign contracts with modeling agencies that can't or won't get them work. I met a model on a shoot who was signed by a large New York agency. Let's call the model Tom. The modeling agency had no intention of sending Tom out on go-sees. They signed him because they feared if Tom signed with another agency, he could take away business from their own signed models. Tom was given a contract for the sole purpose of not allowing him to compete with the modeling agency's signed models.

If you are just beginning, don't sign long-term agreements with a modeling agency you are unfamiliar with. If asked to sign, find out how many other models in your "category" are already signed. Your "category" includes other models who could be booked for the same job as you. There will always be other signed models in your category. However, it is not in your best interest to be one of 50 others who could be submitted for the same job. If yours is the only modeling agency sending models to a go-see, you have a much better chance of getting booked for the job if there are fewer models in your category. See if you can work out a trial period of three to six months. If you like the way you are being represented, sign a longer-term contract.

Before signing with a modeling agency, make sure you understand everything in the contract. If you are not sure about something, show it to a lawyer. Be careful out there.

Getting a Modeling Agency's Attention
If you want to be represented by a particular modeling agency, but you are having a difficult time making a connection, here is something you can try. Book a job on your own, and ask the modeling agency if he or she will handle the booking. Chances are the modeling agency will be glad to represent you. It will be easily made money for the modeling agency. The small percentage that you will lose will be well worth the connection you will have made. The first time I gave a booking to a modeling agency I actually made money, because the modeling agency negotiated a much higher fee than I could have.

INTRODUCING: JOHN PASCLEY

I arrived in Miami with two goals in mind.  One was to have a successful showing at the SOBE Mens Fashion Show, the other was to use one of the models to shoot some of the pieces.

Who would've thought that i would get some great images from a model that was not a model.

Enter John Pascley.  I met John at the walk-thru for the fashion show.  I immediately assumed he was one of the models and asked him.  He explained to me that he was not a model but would be interested in being in the show.  He had been hired to do security at the venue and so that didn't work out but i asked him if he would be interested in shooting some of the pieces the following day and he agreed.

The West Palm Beach Board of Education employee was a natural and seemed very comfortable in front of the camera, along with his great personality, i think we got some dope shots. What do you think?

IT WAS ALL A DREAM

The Pinnacle Of Fashion Forward Accommodations

Find cool, quiet respite from the South Florida sun at Dream South Beach.  Even in a town celebrated for its playful, decadent atmosphere, the new accommodations stands apart. Creative architectural elements, crafted by internationally renowned designer Michael Czysz, blend the familiar with the unexpected, mingling the glamour with surreal fantasy and luxury. Delight your senses in exquisitely appointed rooms and suites. Worthy of a place called Dream, each of their accommodations provides a warm, otherworldly embrace in the heart of South Beach.

The Hotel, originally designed in 1939 was abandoned in the 80's and left to die until a group of forward thinking business people decided to resuscitate the structure instead of building from the ground up.  What was once a shell, has become one of the most beautiful boutique hotels in the world.

My experience can only be described as a DREAM.  I've been to a few hotels but i have never experienced the kind of genuinely friendly and knowledgeable staff (Thanks Raul, Thomas and the rest of the gang) that the DREAM South Beach Hotel offers.

When i arrived, the hotel had only been opened three days and would be celebrating it's grand opening with a huge event on Saturday featuring Maxwell.

I'm bummed because i missed the reception for Designer Norma Kamali yesterday because i booked a flight for a 6:00am departure instead of an evening flight.  Arrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggg!!!!!!
The accomodations were incredible (Thanks Ian of MBB) and the bed was so comfortable, i wanted to ship one home.  Being across the street from the beach only added to the ambieance.

South Beach is a city that never sleeps and the Ocean Drive strip, with it's beautiful people, wall to wall restaurants and nightclubs, was all the way live.

I had never been to Miami Beach before but i will definitely be back.
