I had the pleasure of shooting new model Sean Little today. This was Sean's first professional photo shoot and after initially being nervous, he soon warmed up and seemed like an old pro. The six foot model is also an avid skateboarder.  I'm looking forward to seeing his career blossom into big things.

INNOCENCE LOST: NEWTOWN, CT

In the wake of the Newtown, CT shooting on Friday, December 14th 2012, I am completely devastated and became physically ill by the senseless murders of the people, children and adults who perished yesterday.

In the day since, the devastation has turned to anger. Outrage that there are reports that the person who committed this atrocity apparently had issues long before he committed this crime. How do we as parents, as human beings and as a society continue to see and know these things and do absolutely nothing, nothing about it?

What happened to "It takes a village"? , What happened to "I am my brother's keeper"? How dare we not unequivocally do something? put some kind of "law" in place not 6 months from now, not a year from now but right now that absolutely forbids people to own firearms without a thorough background check and psychological evaluation. It seems that innocence can now only be found in a painting. I have to ask why would you want or need to purchase a gun unless you at some point intended on using it?

There are clearly too many people who are walking, talking time bombs and there is a mental health issue that needs to be addressed before someone is allowed to write their address on an application to purchase a weapon.

I know there will be talk of solutions, amendments, ratifications and the like for a while and then once again there will be silence but I believe too many of these  incidents have made that silence deafening.

I am afraid that with every tragedy I and the world experience, my heart breaks just a little bit more and soon  there will nothing left.

THE CREATIVE SOUL

I am a designer, I am a writer, I am a singer, I am a dancer, I am a comedian, I am emotional, I am an actor, I care about people, animals and things deeply, I am.....It's taken me a long time to embrace, to accept, to acknowledge those things about myself. It's taken me a long time to understand that all that I am others may not buy into, may not believe it, may not accept it and it's taken me a  long time to understand that even if who I am is not true for them doesn't mean it's not true.

I always feel as though I'm at a crossroads between what people think of me and who I genuinely am, who my spirit tells me I am. Even one person's fiction is another one's truth. Even if I never danced on a stage, won an oscar, recorded an album, wrote a novel, told a joke, it doesn't or shouldn't take away from who I believe myself to be. Coming to that realization is when I began to understand that I had given others too much power over me and kept none for myself.

I am often not associated with being a creative person but more associated with not being accomplished. Even when you can prove your accomplishments, you still are not considered accomplished enough. I'm always trying to prove myself to others and in the process forget that I am all of the things that I stated I am. Forgetting who and what I am has at times caused me considerable stress, immense depression that I would often smile through thinking that if I didn't appear happy, those that I was seeking approval from wouldn't buy into the "Product" that I was selling.

For some, the definition of being creative means that you are some non-person whose intent was to be something else and failed.  If asked who has said these things about me, I honestly could not tell you the name of one person who said it to my face but because of that,  some would say that it's all in my head but there are at times a penetrable energy that you receive from people that speak louder than any words could ever say.

I have started on my journey of taking the power that I allowed others to have over me back. I have begun the journey of not just saying "I am all of these things" but believing them. I understand that if I don't take responsibility for my soul, then my soul will cease to exist.

I will not allow others to tell my story. I will no longer be silent in acknowledging my spirit,  in participating in my life and in that, sharing my life with others in a way that allows the light in.

AMBROSE SOLUTIONS: WALK ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS DOCUMENTARY INTERVIEWS DESIGNER BRIIAN DARGON OF BSIXTEE6 AND CHIRP

I met Clint Hoffman of Ambrose Solutions in June of 2012 when he walked into my boutique 66 Blak Birds located in the Dekalb Marketplace in Downtown Brooklyn, NY. He was hilarious and exuded such good energy we had an instant  rapport and he loved the product as well as the market as a whole.

In our conversation, he suggested that the concept of the container boutiques were fantastic and wondered aloud if something like this could work for the aboriginal people of Australia of which he has a special connection to having grown up with them, he also introduced me to the traditional aboriginal music of the international artist Shellie Morris and I instantly fell in love.

We stayed in touch and he informed me that he was creating a documentary and asked if he could interview me, of course I agreed. Much to my surprise when he arrived back in the states, the lovely Shellie whom I now listen to on my ipod was with him as well as the beautiful Jennifer Sarumi (Whoot Whoot).

STREET CRED: BORN TO FLY Tee ON ETSY

On his down time, Dr. Kwame Williams reps the  Chirp by Bsixtee6 abstract "BORN TO FLY" Tee hard.

Most people don't know this story but Mr.Williams has been a constant supporter of the brand almost from day one and keeps me inspired to want to create. I first met him when I had stopped by a school yard, hung some of my tees on the fence and as I was sewing, I videotaped myself talking about my dreams and aspirations. He was with friends and stopped and talked to me and made a purchase.

A BOUTQUE GROWS IN BROOKLYN: VIANOVA GRAND OPENING

Located at 707 Myrtle Avenue in the heart of Bedford Stuyvesant is a new addition to the neighborhood in the form of a boutique called Vianova.

This quaint little shop owned by Colleen and Sebastian features clothing and accessories of yesterday's past as well as independent designers of the present and future.

Vianova opened to great fanfare on Saturday, September 16th 2012 and was received warmly with it's uncluttered but homey decor and the owners warm smiles. I felt as though I was at the home of a friend who has really cool stuff.
