AN ODE TO RE-INVENTION

I've always liked the idea that we have the ability to re-invent ourselves, that if one thing didn't work out, that we could dream a new dream even if the new dream was the old dream. I love that even when things seem to not go as planned, we somehow always find the strength to begin again. As Summer comes to a close, I am already thinking about the new year...old me.  I'm creating space that will allow me to get back to what I love but the difference is not so much in the what but in the how, how will it be different? You and I both will have to stay tuned to see 😃.

#ORLANDO

Writing on the Wrong Rainbow

He was a boy who wrote like a scholar, he wrote about things he heard, saw, felt.  He wrote in a way that made you feel like you were interrupting a relationship, a private whisper, an intimate embrace, a sweet .... As if you were writing on the wrong rainbow.

He and his pen use to  dance on paper, laugh at the forming of the letters, rejoice in the beginnings of .... And then there was silence , a silence so loud it was deafening, a silence so clear as if....

He wrote about 49 smiles, about 49 dances about 49 tears that turned into 49 drops of rain. He named each tear...

STREET STYLE 101: Wardrobe Goals

Ahhhhhh, the fashionable spirit of New York City in the Summer.

Fashion is a very succinct, individualistic form of expression. In that expression, one must always be comfortable and confident in order to convey it with authority.

There are few cities other than New York where that expression is almost (and arguably definitively) comparable to breathing.

There are many who would say "No One Does It Like New York" (that is also debatable) but one thing is certain, the organic nature of individuals to create fashion as a way to convey who they are to the world is as organic as the next hi-rise building.

BE READY SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO GET READY: Meet JAY ROTGER

I have a mantra that I recite daily and that is "Don't Defer Your Dreams". We all do what we have to do to make it in this world and in doing so, we often times deny ourselves the opportunity to pursue the things that make our hearts happy.

I love to come across like-minded souls such as Jay. He would not be considered an industry standard beauty in the world of modeling. That's a big part of the problem, the idea that someone could have a monopoly on a definitive response to what beauty is supposed to look like is absurd.  Jay is a true representation of the make up of this country.  He looks like you and I (but better) and I'm still waiting for this country to embrace all of our differences because that is the definition of beauty.

The 6', 187lb, muscular Jay has the commitment, attitude and personality to create his every dream. He is currently in the running for several projects. I'm looking forward to seeing his trajectory.

WHAT I KNOW FOR SURE: TUESDAY WISDOM

Although I'm relatively new to the business of acting, I thank the higher power and my family for instilling discernment. As a Non-Union Actor, I don't have the strength of a union behind me but the one thing about being raised in the South is that you collect a lot of "Grandma Speak" that you don't necessarily understand until you understand (ex: If it walk like a duck and talk like a duck...then dangnabbit, it's a duck). I say all of this to say for all of us pursuing our art, pay attention to your gut in situations, that's Grandma speaking and she won't allow anything to happen to you.

EVERYONE HAS A BEGINNING: The Jennifer Holliday School of Music

If you ask most actors about their humble beginnings regarding their craft, they would probably roll their eyes up in their heads when telling the story. However, Actor and Clothing Designer Briian David has no qualms in sharing the story and actually thinks it's really hilarious.

Briian says "Everyone has a beginning so what is there to be ashamed of? I'm actually really thankful to have been given the opportunity to perform with such a talented group of people. I'm actually shy by nature but also silly and having been given this exposure allowed me to show a side of myself that only a few people get to see".

Take a look for yourselves.

ETSY ALL THE WAY: Designer and Actor Briian David Re-Opens Etsy Shop

NY Based Actor/Clothing and Accessories Designer Briian David has re-opened his Etsy Store. After a five year hiatus, Briian decided to re-open the web based store just in time for the holidays.

The link for the store is https://www.etsy.com/shop/Chirp66

Briian says the shop will eventually feature his signature, one-of-a-kind, hand sewn items as well as printed tees and kitschy accessories made by him as well.

"As a consumer, I've always been more of a mom and pop type of shopper (no disrespect to the larger retailers). I like finding unique items that aren't necessarily mass produced or products that are produced in smaller quantities that speak to me. When deciding to re-open the shop after five years, I hope that our new visitors will appreciate our aesthetic and visit us often as the product will be constantly evolving but still maintaining the small shop feel".

MOTIVATING MOMENT: Words of Wisdom from Meryl 11/10/15

It's not easy being an artist (Hell, it's not easy being ) so I often try to find ways to be inspired as I pursue my endeavors. I came across this today and it spoke to me.

Meryl Streep - "This was me on my way home from an audition for King Kong where I was told I was too "ugly" for the part. This was a pivotal moment for me. This one rogue opinion could derail my dreams of becoming an actress or force me to pull myself up by the boot straps and believe in myself. I took a deep breath and said "I'm sorry you think I'm too ugly for your film but you're just one opinion in a sea of thousands and I'm off to find a kinder tide." Today I have 18 Academy Awards. :)

CLOTHING DESIGNER/ACTOR...SINGER? BRIIAN DAVID BRINGS THE NOISE!!!

Most readers of this post probably don't  know that before there was a piece of fabric sewn or a script read noted Clothing Designer and Actor Briian David was also a Singer/Songwriter in an R&B/POP Group by the name of "VOICEMALE" (Yes! That was really the name). Hell! You may have never even heard of Briian David but that's okay,
If he has his way, you will.

The clothing designer for Bsixtee6, Chirp and Romance & Rebellion is going back to one of his first loves, music.

The aforementioned Designer whose worked has been featured in Japanese Vogue, The Source Magazine, CLIK Magazine and BRM Magazine just to name a few and Actor who has appeared in such films as "The Raging Boom", "Afterparty Babies", "Sunshine Becomes You", "The Outsiders" and most recently "Human People" starring Michael Cera (Superbad) has decided that he has something else to say...musically.

Briian who coined the phrase "ARTISTPRENUER" says "For me, it is not about becoming the next big anything, I always want to be in a state of becoming. I want to indulge in the things that I'm passionate about and the things that continue to make me happy and hopefully make others happy as well".

Briian says he will begin working on the as yet untitled track sometime in 2016 and will write or co-write the single.

Take Two...or is it Three: Noted Designer Briian Dargon has other passions

Noted Clothing and Accessories Designer Briian Dargon has begun his second act by delving into his life long passion for acting.

Having just wrapped a role in the Independent Comedy "THE OPENERS" , Briian is well on his way to tackling Hollywood.

In "THE OPENERS" Directed by Leslie Korein, he plays a Stand-Up Comedian/Heckler at an Open Mic.

Briian's other films include "After Party Babies" Directed by Henry Cruz and "The Raging Boom" Directed by Mahagony B.
He also appears as the instructor in a commercial for Hamilton College.

Briian opens up about his waiting to start his acting career.

LC: You're relatively new to acting and you're a person of a certain age, why now?

B: Why not now? Now is just as good a time as any. To be more straightforward, acting is something that I've always wanted to pursue and had a few opportunities  when I was younger that didn't work out but when my last birthday rolled around I made a promise to myself that I was going to pursue it. I didn't want to have any regrets. There was some trepidation in the beginning because I was beating myself up wondering "what if I weren't good enough" or forget being good enough what if I really sucked, lol. My mom used to say you've already failed if you don't try and that's kind of how I live my life...within reason.

LC: In a very short period of time, you've begun to create a resume that is beginning to look quite impressive, what has the experience been like for you this far?

B: Thank you very much. I didn't come into this trying to be anything other than who I am. Acting for me is an extension of who I have always been creatively and I felt like it would be a challenge that I could rise to. I am so grateful that the people I've worked with so far allowed me to come on to their projects and trust me to deliver and they have provided an atmosphere that makes me want to be my best.

LC: What has been the downside of any?

B: There hasn't really been a downside, I guess it all depends on how you look at it. I've gone on auditions where I didn't get the part, it stings because you may want it really bad but I also look at it from the perspective that it wasn't for me and that I'm now available for the role that is.

Designer/Actor Briian David Pens An Open Letter...To Himself

Noted Clothing and Accessories Designer and Actor Briian David was asked in an interview what motivated him to pursue his craft. His response may surprise you.

As a teenager I remember seeing someone I had grown up with in a music video. I remember being mesmerized and must have watched it one hundred times (seriously). I was so geeked about seeing this person I knew and admired, I immediately thought to reach out to him and congratulate him on what I thought to be a great success.

I've always had dreams of becoming a performer, acting in particular and so I also sought advice from him. I expressed my past endeavors and desire and inquired how to get started. Their response was very matter of fact, they simply stated that I was fat. I should stop drinking 3 liter family size sodas and eating chocolate and potatoe chips in my sleep, lololololol.

I've never expressed this to them so they are unaware of how that seemingly innocent statement (maybe from his point of view) absolutely crushed me. What they didn't know is that I already had major insecurities as I was struggling with severe acne and it was the bane of my superficially vain existence as well as other issues.

The expectation I had of him was to be embracing and provide me with the information instead of hi-lighting what at the time was so very obvious.

I understand now that he didn't have it all figured out and therefore couldn't offer any constructive words of wisdom or encouragement as he was just starting his career and probably needed the same thing that I was seeking from him. I equate it to being hungry and asking someone else to hold the fork when you know your hands work.

I initially internalized it as "I'm just not good enough and will never be" and even if I had stopped eating chocolate and chips, there would have been some other reason to say no. Having been told that so many times in my life I kind of just filed it away with the others.

I've watched dreams turn into reality but I've also seen dreams unfulfilled, I've come to believe it's important to decide what side of the coin you want to be on.

I've learned that you don't have to stay committed to your circumstances and that you don't have to emulate or compete with the next person to reach your idea of success or in some cases, wholeness in order to have fulfillment.

Make no mistake, you will have to do the work but the phrase "what is for you will be for you" is absolutely true. Metaphorically speaking, you may have to meet the dragon halfway or go all the way to where it rests but if you are committed to that, it will engulf you in its smoke, ash and flame to reveal the phoenix within.

The thing I would tell my teenage self is this:

Hey Briian,

You may not always be aware of it but there will be people who genuinely root for you. This statement is important as is this, you will also sometimes find that you have to be your own cheerleader, not because those you look to for support refuse to give it but because people and the world don't revolve around you and your needs. It is a reciprocal thing and you may be asked to be of support or comfort to someone else more often than not and you can only do that if you are well, if you take care of your needs without the expectations of others.

You will grow up in an age wherein information is readily available, utilize it.

Don't allow your fears to deter you from your goals. Everything is not personal even when it appears as such.

Know that your talents can really only be validated by you, you have to believe you are what you say you are. No! It won't always be easy but it will be worth it. When writing your story don't let someone else hold the pen. Cliche maybe, but no less true.

Understand that each step of the way you are good enough and the steps you are taking may be misunderstood but they're yours. Finger pointing is beneath you and won't be beneficial (You won't always get that right either).

Understand that those dreams you had/have is your mind telling you that it's already written.

Laugh heartily , love deeply, sing loudly, dance willfully, write poetically, breathe and breathe some more. It's your life and if this is the only one we get, enjoy it.

You have been loved, you are loved and you do love. It may show itself differently from time to time but it is real and it remains.

I'm here for you always,

You

THE SECOND ACT: Clothing and Accessories Designer Briian Dargon

"With any part you play, there is a certain amount of yourself in it. There has to be, otherwise it's not just acting, it's lying"- Johnny Depp

Briian Dargon, the noted clothing and accessories designer has begun to tell a different kind of story by pursuing a life long dream of becoming an actor.

Briian who will use Briian David ( his first and middle name) professionally, says that as long as he can remember, he's wanted to be an actor.

His first foray was an open audition for the New Mickey Mouse Club in 1977 that he snuck to after his Grandmother forbade him to go. Briian says jokingly "it was an eye opener, when I arrived and they called my name, they asked me who was I represented by? did I have a headshot? resume? did I have a parent with me?". I was like a deer caught in headlights, I had absolutely no clue what they were talking about, all I knew is that I had the desire. My Grandmother upon finding out that I disobeyed her promptly closed my eye, that's the joke, although I did get a wedged heeled shoe thrown at me (another joke).

Briian went on to secure employment with several record labels including SONY (Gospel division Harmony Records) as well as Notation Music Publishing wherein he received a credit on Rosie O'Donnell's Compilation Christmas Album.

Additionally, Briian delved back into film in 2008 when  he worked as a background actor and part of the production crew for the independent film "AFTER PARTY BABIES" directed by Henry Cruz.

After a few other false starts, fast forward to 2015 and having only taken acting classes for five weeks Briian had secured his first acting role in an independent feature film entitled "THE RAGING BOOM" playing Chief of Detectives Simoin. The film was written and directed by Mahogany B.

Briian says he doesn't subscribe to the idea that you have to have one thing you love and that he has to choose between designing and acting. "I consider myself an artist and I feel that I had no choice in that so why should I have to choose how I express it?. This is a huge deal to me, and I understand how fortunate I am to be entrusted with the responsibility of bringing this character to life and I don't take it for granted".

We wish him luck in his future artistic  endeavors.
